Awie Botes is the Dominion Fertility Embryology Laboratory Director, and has over 30 years experience in the field. Born and raised in South Africa, Awie completed his Bachelors of Science in Human Physiology and Genetics while living there. He began his career in a human genetics laboratory actively doing research and development in in vitro fertilization and human cytogenetics. During that time he was instrumental as Laboratory Manager, developing two of the very first successful in vitro fertilization laboratories in South Africa where the first IVF baby was born in 1983.

In 1992, Awie relocated to the United States and worked as Laboratory Manager in two different clinics in California. During this time he became board certified as Technical Supervisor in Embryology and Andrology through the American Board of Bioanalysis. In 2002, Dominion Fertility was fortunate to have Awie join us to lead our embryology team. In 2004, he became board certified as an Embryology Laboratory Director through the American Board of Bioanalysis.

For the past 7 years, Awie has utilized his extensive experience with tissue culture, human genetics and embryology to refine the quality of the laboratory techniques employed at Dominion. Patient identity and isolation has dramatically improved, and our pregnancy and implantation rates are comprable to the best in the world today.

Awie's close association with the development of IVF, and the inception of the technologies, leads him to continually strive to improve the quality and technology used in our IVF lab today. Some of the state of the art technologies we now offer as routine laboratory services include blastocyst culturing, Natural Cycle IVF, Natural Cycle FET (frozen embryo transfer), and vitrification (fast freezing) of embryos with much higher survival rates.

With the assistance of our highly qualified and dedicated embryologists, Awie will continue to improve outcomes at Dominion Fertility. He has a motto, "Every embryo counts," and to that end, he strives to help every patient couple become a family.

In January 2009, Awie traveled back to South Africa to attend the wedding of a twin he helped conceive in the first IVF laboratory he set up there. Awie has maintained a close relationship with this family because seeng them struggle to go from a professional couple in a sterile house, to a family in a home has been an inspiration to him in his career.
