Success Rates

Success of In Vitro Fertilization and Dominion Fertility

Over the past 20 years Dominion Fertility has helped thousands of patients succeed in having healthy babies. It is important to note that most patients undergoing IVF stimulation have an embryo transfer, but the transfer may not always occur during the same cycle as the stimulation. In these patients the embryos are transferred 4 to 8 weeks later resulting in a better chance for a successful pregnancy.

Our success rates for the past several years are described in the tables on the following 3 pages: In Vitro Fertilization, IVF with Donor Egg, IVF with ICSI (intracytoplasmioc sperm injection). We look forward to discussing with you what these tables mean. The uniqueness of Dominion Fertility is its team of caring professionals who focus their expertise and experience on each patient’s individual situation.

FACT: Our data show that over half of our patients less than 40 years old achieve a clinical pregnancy after only 1 or 2 stimulated IVF egg retrievals.

The following table provides an analysis of pregnancy rates for all patients entering their first cycle with Dominion Fertility and Endocrinology between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007, based on the number of patient retrievals. These dates were chosen as they represented the most current data at the time of analysis that had been verified by ultrasound according to Virginia state law. Patients were divided into groups based on age at the time of retrieval. No donor cycles were included in this analysis as this would unfairly bias the pregnancy rates. Separate analyses were performed to include donor cycles, verifying a significant increase in pregnancies per retrieval. A description of the methods employed to generate this table follows.

Methodology:

For the time period given, January 1, 2006 – December 31, 2007, all patients that received in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment were screened to determine the cohort of patients who underwent their first retrieval with Dominion Fertility and Endocrinology during this interval. Individual chart review was then used to determine which of those patients became clinically pregnant (according to the definition provided by Virginia State Law) as a result of the transfer of embryos generated by the first patient retrieval. This process was repeated to identify patients who became pregnant as a result of embryos generated for the second patient retrieval. The transfer of embryos generated by a given retrieval is inclusive of all fresh and frozen transfers utilizing that pool of embryos. This data is summarized in the accompanying table. Patients that failed to become pregnant after exhausting the embryos generated by the second patient retrieval were treated as non-pregnant.

Summary:

For all patients who underwent their first IVF retrieval with Dominion Fertility and Endocrinology between January 1, 2006 – December 31, 2007, a majority became pregnant after undergoing only 1 or 2 retrievals. For patients under 35 years of age, over half became pregnant after only a single retrieval, and half of the patients under 40 years of age became pregnant after a single retrieval. With the inclusion of a second retrieval, these rates were clearly increased for both age groups.

Note: All pregnancies clinically confirmed by transvaginal ultrasound. Tables formatted according to Virginia State Law.
