Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI is a simple procedure
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), is a simple procedure that is done in our office and takes only a few minutes. Prior to an IUI, sperm (from either your partner or a sperm donor) is specially washed and prepared in our laboratory. During the procedure, the prepared sperm is transferred directly to your uterus in a process very similar to a Pap test.
IUI is used in many situations
An IUI will be performed if you choose donor sperm for your pregnancy or if sexual intercourse is not possible. It can be used in many other situations as well to increase the chances of a pregnancy. IUI is performed at the time of ovulation during your natural cycle or can be combined with the use of fertility drugs. You and your doctor can discuss whether IUI is a good option for you.
Medication might be used with IUI
Though you and your doctor will discuss the specifics of your situation, it is common for patients to take Clomid to induce ovulation (or superovulation) in conjunction with an IUI. Women who do not respond to Clomid may be candidates for injectable fertility medications.
Pregnancy rates with IUI vary depending on circumstances
Because IUI is used in a variety of circumstances, IUI pregnancy rates vary widely with patient age and infertility factors.
In patients younger than 35 years of age, about one-third to one-half of patients will become pregnant in 1 to 4 treatments.
In patients with unexplained infertility, the spontaneous pregnancy rate is less than 5 percent per month. That rate can be increased to 6 percent using a combination of Clomid and IUI. The combination of injectable fertility medications and IUI can increase the rate to between 9 percent to 12 percent.
IUI requires only simple monitoring visits and a brief in-office procedure
If IUI is right for you, you’ll begin with a office visits for monitoring. At these visits, you will typically have your blood drawn and receive an ultrasound. The doctor uses this information to determine the optimal time for an HCG trigger shot and subsequent IUI.
IUI itself takes only minutes to perform and is usually painless. You will be asked to lie on your backs for about 10 to 15 minutes following the procedure. Then you may then return to your normal activities. A pregnancy test is usually performed about 14 days following an IUI.
